Prepping for your senior photos doesn't have to be hard
What To Do Before Your Senior Session: Helpful Tips for a Stress-Free Experience
Your senior session is your time to shine, and a little planning will help bring out your best. Here are some fun and helpful tips to get you ready!
-
Find Your Inspiration.
Before we dive into the details, let's talk about what inspires you. Browse through some senior portrait galleries—whether you’re drawn to timeless elegance or something more playful and whimsical, this will help us set the perfect tone for your session. -
The Wardrobe Dilemma.
The big question: What to wear? Choose outfits that reflect your personality. Whether you’re going for cozy or stylish (or both!), the most important thing is to be you. It’s also a great excuse for a little shopping spree! And don’t forget to compromise with your mom on one outfit she would love to see you in. -
Location, Location, Location.
Do you prefer an urban setting, a natural landscape, or something completely unique? We’ll chat about locations that fit your style so the backdrop helps tell your story. -
Accessorize!
Accessories are your secret weapon. Hats, jackets, funky jewelry—they can really add personality and flair to your photos. Feel free to bring along anything that makes your look pop! -
Dare to be Different.
Have hobbies or quirks that define who you are? Bring them along! Whether it’s a musical instrument, sports gear, books, art supplies, your car, or even your pet, these personal touches will help tell your story. -
Be Prepared.
Make sure your outfits are clean, ironed, and ready the night before your session. It helps to organize everything—including accessories, socks and shoes—so you can grab and go without any stress. -
Glam It Up.
Consider treating yourself to professional hair and makeup. A consultation with a stylist and/or makeup artist a few days beforehand will ensure everyone is prepped and ready for the look you want. If you're doing your own hair and makeup, keep it simple—a lightweight foundation, mascara, and lip gloss go a long way, and a fresh blow out will always photograph beautifully. -
Stay Hydrated and Rest Up.
I’ll have water on hand, but feel free to bring your favorite drink to stay hydrated. And remember, a good night’s sleep will help you look and feel refreshed for your session! -
Have a meal beforehand!
No one wants to show up hangry. Make sure you eat a good meal before your session so you can bring all the positive vibes. -
Bring a playlist!
Music sets the mood. Whether it’s your favorite hype songs or something that calms your nerves, having your playlist ready will help you feel comfy and ready to have some fun. -
Express Yourself.
Whether you want to flash a big smile or keep it more low-key, I’ll be looking for what feels most natural and genuine to you. Together, we’ll capture a look that feels like you.
What Not to Do Before Your Senior Session: Helpful Tips for a Stress-Free Experience
Your senior portrait session is a celebration of YOU! While there are plenty of things you can do to ensure your photos turn out amazing, here are a few things to avoid so you can feel your best and let your confidence shine.
-
Don’t wait until the last minute to choose your outfits!
It’s so important to try on each outfit ahead of time to make sure you feel comfortable—whether you’re walking, kneeling, or sitting. The more comfortable you feel, the more natural and relaxed you’ll look in your photos! -
Don’t follow the crowd.
Your senior session is all about telling your unique story, and I’m here to help you showcase what makes you special. Don't feel pressured to do what everyone else is doing. Together, we’ll create something authentic and true to you. -
Avoid drastic changes to your appearance right before the session.
While a fresh look is exciting, making big changes like a haircut the day of your session can add unnecessary stress. If you’re planning a cut or color, do it about a week in advance so you have time to get comfortable with it. -
Skip the DIY spray tan (especially if it's your first time!).
A natural, glowing complexion always photographs beautifully. An at-home spray tan, however, can be unpredictable, and you don’t want any surprises on photo day! While I do retouch every image, including editing out redness, spray tans can sometimes require more extensive work and may incur an additional charge. -
Avoid sunburns.
Whether you’re spending time at the beach or just hanging outside, make sure to wear sunscreen leading up to your session. Redness and peeling skin are tough to edit out and can detract from your natural beauty. While I retouch every image, editing out significant sunburn or peeling skin may require extra time and could result in an additional charge. -
Don’t pick at blemishes.
I know it’s tempting, but try not to stress over any spots or imperfections. I’ll take care of minor retouching during editing so your skin looks naturally beautiful without you needing to worry about it. - Don't forget to iron/steam your clothes. Also, hang them when you are done to prevent more wrinkles. While I retouch every image, editing out significant wrinkles may require extra time and could result in an additional charge.
