Recently, a session at my studio in Mercer County started exactly that way. A client had booked a headshot session, and the goal was simple: create strong, professional portraits he could use moving forward.

But sometimes the best images come from the moments you don’t plan.

Toward the end of the session, the client casually mentioned he was a boxer and had his gloves in the car.

Immediately the shoot started to feel like it had more potential than just standard headshots.

He grabbed the gloves, and we began experimenting with a few poses. But visually something still felt a little off. The combination of a polo shirt and boxing gloves just didn’t quite match the energy of the images we were creating.

I mentioned out loud that the shirt and the gloves weren’t really working together.

He paused for a second and suggested taking the shirt off.

That small decision changed everything about the session.

Some clients come into the studio with mood boards, multiple outfits, and very specific ideas.

Others walk in with almost no plan at all.

Both approaches work.

Sometimes the best images come from simply staying open to what unfolds during the session. When people relax and stop overthinking the process, their personality comes through naturally.

That’s usually when the most memorable portraits happen.
