Grove City High School Senior Photos at Moraine State Park

Senior year has a funny way of moving incredibly fast. One minute you are ordering a letterman jacket and driving to practices. The next, you are talking about graduation, college, and what comes after high school.

That is one reason I think senior pictures deserve to be treated like more than another item on the senior-year checklist. For a lot of families, this may be the last time they intentionally hire a professional photographer for their child until someday, possibly, a wedding. 

Kenzie’s senior session was the perfect example of what can happen when we make an experience out of it.

Grove City High School Senior Pictures With a Weather Plot Twist

Kenzie is a Grove City High School senior, and we had her session planned for Moraine State Park.

Unfortunately, Pennsylvania weather decided it wanted a speaking role. Storms were moving in, and because of the family’s very busy schedule, we really only had this one day to make the session happen.

Instead of panicking, we kept an eye on the weather. Everyone was ready earlier than planned, so we moved the session time up and headed out before the weather could catch us. It ended up working beautifully.

Kenzie’s mom later told me:

“We absolutely loved working with you! Your patience thru the whole process and the openness of moving up the time because of the storms rolling in just surpassed what we could ask for. We will definitely be working with you again! And I'm glad your so personable to the seniors to let them be themselves.”

That flexibility is part of senior photography too. Sometimes the plan changes. Sometimes a storm is coming. Sometimes we need to pivot. We still make it work because I am never trying to photograph multiple seniors in a day.

Making Senior Pictures a Family Experience

Kenzie did not come alone. Her family came along, and her sister and friend helped capture behind-the-scenes photos and video while we worked. That changed the feel of the afternoon completely. It was not just, “Go get your senior pictures taken.” They made a memory out of it.

And Moraine State Park was an especially meaningful choice because Kenzie’s parents had been married there. Now they were returning years later for their daughter’s senior pictures. That kind of connection is one of the reasons I love choosing locations that actually mean something to the family instead of automatically taking every senior to the same three places.

One Location, A Lot of Different Senior Photos

Kenzie brought two outfits and wanted a good mixture of close-up portraits, full-length photographs, and different scenery. Moraine gave us plenty to work with.

We were able to photograph around the sand, beach, water, flowers, dock, and surrounding landscape, which meant we could change the feeling of the photographs without spending half the session driving from location to location.

And Kenzie brought details that were very much part of her senior year. Her letterman jacket. Her poms. Her track shoes. A gorgeous dress. And even her little stuffed animal. Those are the pieces I want seniors to bring. Not because every photograph needs to be filled with props, but because ten or twenty years from now, those small things will immediately take you back to who you were at seventeen or eighteen.

Senior Pictures Should Look Like More Than One Version of You

One thing Kenzie specifically wanted was variety. So we did not photograph the same pose twenty-five different ways and call it a gallery.

We mixed close-ups with full-length images. We changed backgrounds and scenery. We used her activities and her outfits. Some photographs were more polished. Others were fun and relaxed.

The goal is to give a senior and her parents choices. Because Mom may fall in love with one photograph. Kenzie may immediately choose another. Dad may have a completely different favorite. That is normal. Actually, I think that is a sign we did our job.

Kenzie summed up her experience pretty perfectly:

“Such a fun experience and the results are so perfect, DEFINITELY book with Danielle!!”

She also mentioned something parents understandably care about: reasonable pricing. Senior photography is an investment, but I also want families to understand what they are buying and have options for what they ultimately take home.

Senior Pictures That Don't Disappear Into a Camera Roll

Kenzie’s family chose printed photographs for the family along with a matching digital collection. Their digital images were delivered on my LUXE card, which also gives them access to an app containing their photographs.

Kenzie has the app. Mom has the app. Dad has the app.

Their favorite senior photographs are right there when they want them instead of being buried somewhere between 14,000 screenshots, grocery-store photos, memes, and whatever else has taken over their camera roll.

And they still have the printed photographs to actually see and enjoy. I am a big believer in having both. Digital images are convenient. Prints become part of your home and your family history.

Why Senior Pictures Matter More Than We Sometimes Realize

There are thousands of photographs of our kids growing up. Phone pictures. First-day-of-school pictures. Sports pictures. Birthday pictures. Vacation pictures.

But professional senior portraits are different. They intentionally document this strange little bridge between childhood and adulthood. Your senior is still yours. But they are also becoming very much their own person. College, work, moving away, careers, relationships, and adult life are suddenly right around the corner. And realistically, this could be the last time you hire someone specifically to professionally photograph your son or daughter until their wedding someday.

That is why I think senior pictures are worth doing well. And definitely not identically to everyone else. With time to plan. A senior who gets a voice in what we create. Room for the letterman jacket, the dress, the sport they have spent years doing, the worn out little stuffed animal they cannot quite leave behind yet, and whatever else belongs to this particular season of their life.

Because senior year goes incredibly fast. The photographs do not have to.
