A professional headshot does not always have to mean standing in front of a plain backdrop.
For this recent men’s headshot session, we created a mix of studio portraits and on-location images so he would have photographs that could work across different parts of his business and professional presence.
The goal was not just to create one good headshot. It was to give him a useful collection of images with a little more personality and variety.
We began at my portrait studio in Mercer, PA, where we created a range of different looks.
Some were intentionally safe, simple, and professional. These are the kinds of headshots that work well for a company website, LinkedIn profile, professional bio, directory, or other places where you need a clean, polished photograph.
But because of the type of business he is in, we did not stop there.
We also created some more creative studio images that gave us room to play with lighting, posing, expression, and the overall feel of the photographs.
That is one of the advantages of having a studio session. We can create the traditional images you know you need and then push things a little further when your brand or profession calls for something with more personality.
While we were working in the studio, he was able to see his photographs as we created them.
That makes it easy to look at what is working, adjust posing or expression, and make sure we are creating the right mix of images before moving on.
It also takes some of the mystery out of having your photograph taken.
From there, we moved outside the studio for the second part of his session.
The on-location photographs gave us something completely different from the controlled studio portraits.
Instead of a backdrop, we could use the environment as part of the image and create photographs that felt a little more natural and connected to his work and personal brand.
Unlike the studio portion, these images could not be viewed in real time as we photographed. But combining both parts of the session gave him a much broader collection than we could have created with a traditional headshot appointment alone.
Different photographs can serve different purposes.
A simple studio portrait might be perfect for LinkedIn or a company bio, while a more creative portrait or environmental photograph may work better for a website, social media, marketing, press, or personal branding.
That is why I like creating variety when the session calls for it.
You can have the photograph that feels safe and professional and the one that makes someone stop scrolling.
If you need updated professional photographs, we can build your session around how you actually plan to use them.
That might mean a straightforward studio headshot session, or it might mean combining clean professional portraits with more creative studio work and on-location images.
